The Top 10 Independent Games of 2006

Number 10 – Kingdom Elemental

Somewhere between tactical and real time strategy there exists a perfect blend. Kingdom Elemental may very well be it.

Played out in the fantasy realm of Eteran, players take on the role of the ‘good guys’ as they try to chase the beasties back into the realm of the shadow by following them straight down to the underworld (not to say that the ‘good guys’ are all the friendly sort, Necromancers teamed with Elfish-looking female archers make for a very original pair).

The mixture of play in the game is really what sets Kingdom Elemental apart. Players pick out a small army and place units on the board like a tactical game, and then like a real-time strategy title, the army will engage the enemy.

Most of the intrigue in the play comes from the ability to pause the game and issue commands to each unit. In games like Read the rest of this entry »

Firefox Extentions: Are They Actually Useful?

Mozilla Firefox has recently taken the Internet Browser war to the extreme. With flexibility and security, it is gaining in the market of internet users out there. Compared to Internet Explorer… anything is better than that. And one of Firefox’s best known features is its wide use of Extensions, or plug-ins that enable your browser to do new things. Many extensions help out with your web browsing experience, while others are useful for showing quick information. I’m going to show you my favorite extensions and why they can be useful for you too.

The New Processor : Intel Core Duo

Intel the most well known chip manufacture out there has been advertising for quite sometime aboutDual Core and amazing new performance features. But really… what is Core Duo.

Blue-Ray and HD DVD formats, What’s the Different?

Blue-Ray and HD DVD formats are next generation of optically burned disks. So far, I have seen a few brands of Blue-Ray drives available for sale. However, the competing HD DVD drives seem to be still a promise not yet to hit the market.

Okay, what does this really mean to you. Blue-Ray drives can write either to single or double sided disks, single sided being 25gigabytes and double sided at 50gigabytes. Rather surprising and you surely are asking, “Hey, Mystic… where can I get one of these new writer drives for my PC and what is it going to cost me?” The truth is… I have only found a couple of website that offer the single sided writer drive and the going price seems to be just under $1,000. The blank media is $20 for one 2 5gig blank disk, (not re-writable). You can tell we are at the bleeding edge of this technology, just like when DVDs or even 1.44mg floppies first became available. The sooner we have mass marketing of this technology, the sooner the price will drop down to what we are currently paying for DVD writer drives. Currently, I found the Pioneer BDR-101A Blu-ray / 2×2x BD-R/RE / 8×4x8x DVD±R/RW / 2.4x+R DL / 2x-R DL / Blu-ray Disc Internal Writer at Tiger-Direct ready for shipment at $999.99. You can also find the blank media available there.
